Description

A deep-sea camera's hydrophone at 3,000 feet picked up a heartbeat — the slow, car-sized heartbeat of a blue whale, the largest animal that has ever lived — and it was speeding up. The blue whale doesn't belong at 3,000 feet; its deepest recorded dive is barely a thousand, so this one had driven itself nearly triple past its own limit, into a killing depth, to escape something. Then it began to call — not its ocean-crossing song, but a short, urgent, repeated pulse the analyst had never heard a blue whale make, a cry for help in water where no other whale could follow. And something answered — a throb lower than the loudest animal on Earth, rising from beneath the deepest thing in the sea, until the whale's racing heart and the pressure beneath it descended together and went silent. Was it a sound carrying from somewhere shallower, the way the record says — or did the largest animal that ever lived just run from something bigger, in the dark below the bottom of our map?
