Description

In the autumn of 1988, two fishermen working the deep water off New Zealand hauled a shark’s jaw up in their net — and when they spread it on the deck, its span was wider than their boat. They didn’t keep it, didn’t photograph it, didn’t report it — they cut it loose, steamed home, and one of them never worked a boat again. New Zealand sits on the edge of the Kermadec Trench, deeper than Everest is tall, and that same water has handed science real giants from the dark — fishermen there hauled up the largest colossal squid ever found. The teeth the man described — broad, serrated, the size of his open hand — belong to only one animal: the megalodon, extinct for 3.5 million years, whose fossil teeth still carpet that deep floor by the thousand. So was it a relic of a monster long gone, dredged up by mistake — and if it was the find of a lifetime, why did two working men throw it back and walk away from the sea? Tell me what you think came up in that net.
