Description

For decades the waters off South Africa were the great white shark capital of the world — then, over a few years, the great whites vanished, and the fishermen began saying no boat should go back out. This part is documented and real: starting in 2015 great whites washed ashore with only their livers surgically removed, and by 2020 sightings in False Bay had fallen to near zero. Science names the killers — two orcas, Port and Starboard — that flip great whites, open them for the liver, and whom the sharks fear so completely they flee entire coastlines for weeks. But the fishermen’s version goes further: that the orcas were only the part we could see, and that one Gansbaai skipper watched a shadow longer than his boat pass beneath the hull before he quit the water for good. There is no 120-foot megalodon — but the legend grew in the one place the impossible truly happened, where the ocean’s apex predator was hunted out of its own kingdom and fled. So what really emptied that water, and why haven’t the great whites come back?
