Description

A survey ROV at 6,000 feet caught something cross the top of its frame three times — circling, tighter with each pass, the slow deliberate way a great white sizes up a thing it hasn't decided about yet. Scaled against the vehicle's own laser dots, the body was more than twice the length of any shark alive today — in the range we only ever use for one animal. That animal is the megalodon, the largest shark that ever lived, and it has been extinct for 3.5 million years — the fossil record stops cold, and no honest reading says otherwise. But that record can only read the shallow, warm, near-shore sea where fossils form; the deep floor, two miles down and dark, hands us almost nothing — "extinct" really means gone from the sunlit water we actually watch. The ocean has hidden giants in that blind spot before — the giant squid wasn't filmed alive until 2004. So when something that size circles a camera where our certainty was never looking, what is the honest thing to call it?
