Description

In February 1998, a fishing crew off the Lofoten coast watched a pod of orcas stop hunting, go silent, and bolt for the shallows. Orcas are the apex — the thing that eats great whites and fears nothing — and these ran into water too shallow to hide them and stayed three hours. The skipper’s sounder had caught a mass rising from 400 meters just before they fled — and it never came up to breathe. A researcher’s hydrophone a kilometer away recorded one low pulse, two seconds before the pod went dark, that she’s never been able to name. If the animal we crowned the top of the ocean recognized something and ran, what do the orcas know is down there that we’ve spent our whole history insisting isn’t?
