Description
In July 2008, off the coast of Baja California, a charter captain who'd worked the Sea of Cortez for years came back to the dock, tied up his boat, and started turning clients away — because something had surfaced beside him that afternoon that he couldn't fit into any animal he knew.
The fishermen of the Gulf have a name for it, older than any of them: El Demonio Negro, the Black Demon — a shark they say runs fifty feet and more, flat black, with a whipping tail, that overturns boats and takes whole sea lions. There's no body, no photograph, no proof, and the honest answer is that it's probably a braid of ordinary things — a big great white, a whale shark, a scavenged carcass — knotted together by fear. But the legend never grows the way invented stories do; for a hundred years it stays stubbornly the same: black, fifty feet, the same grounds. And in 2008 a real sighting was credible enough to send a documentary crew to the Gulf to look for it.
This isn't really a question about a shark. It's a question about the water — a sea that drops to 10,000 feet a few miles off a sunlit tourist beach, a place that has hidden giants from us before — and about the one piece of evidence that keeps washing ashore: whale carcasses with bites no one can quite explain. So what did the captain see? And why does a man whose living depends on going back out decide, after one afternoon, that he never will? Tell me what you think is out there. I read every comment.
