He Disappeared From America at 64 — This Is Where He Ended Up My name's Earl. I'm 66 now, and I'm from a small city in Ohio, steel and rubber country, the kind of place that had its heart torn out when the factories closed and never quite got it back. I worked as a welder, thirty-eight years of it, mostly in fabrication shops, building and repairing the guts of machines and structures nobody ever thinks about but everybody depends on. It's hot, hard, dangerous work, and it aged me the way that kind of work ages a man, fast and deep. By the time I hit my sixties, my body was a roadmap of it. Bad lungs from the fumes, a shoulder that never healed right, hands that ached in the cold. But I was proud of it. A welder leaves things behind him that last, and I liked knowing that.
