Description
Get Make Them Pay here: https://knowrightsuk.gumroad.com/l/make_them_pay
Two athletes are driving through west London on a Saturday afternoon. Their three month old son is in the back seat.
A police car follows them. Within a couple of minutes both are out of the car and both are in handcuffs, and the baby is still in the back seat. Officers said they could smell cannabis. The car was searched. Nothing was found.
I walk you through that stop, what the law allowed at each step, and what happened afterwards. And there is a date at the end of this story that almost nobody who followed it knows about, which changes the meaning of every part before it.
📋 WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS
— The sequence that decided it: a stop, a smell, handcuffs, a search, nothing found
— What the Commissioner actually apologised for, and why it is narrower than anybody remembers
— What their own solicitor said about the complaint system on the day
— The date in October 2024 that never made a front page
— The four things to say in the first thirty seconds of any stop
🔎 SOURCES
The IOPC statement following the misconduct hearing, for the date of the stop and the five officers' outcomes. The Police Appeal Tribunal decision of 4 October 2024, under the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime. Section 163 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. Reporting of the Commissioner's evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee, July 2020.
⚠️ THE PART TO REMEMBER
A misconduct panel made findings in October 2023. Those findings were set aside on appeal in October 2024 and the two officers were reinstated. I set out what was decided and when, and I do not tell you which decision was right — that is not mine to decide and I was not in either room.
What the case shows is narrower and more useful than an argument about anybody's honesty: the complaint system is slow, uncertain, and can reverse. It is a backstop worth using — not where a bad stop gets fixed.
FREE HELP FIRST. Your own bodycam footage is your data and there is no charge to ask for it — ask early, because forces do not keep it forever. Citizens Advice will look at a complaint with you for free. The duty solicitor costs you nothing, ever. Always the free route before anybody paid.
📘 Make Them Pay — every script on this channel in one place, plus five template letters with the parts you fill in marked in brackets, including the request for your own footage. Plain English, big type, in the glove box: https://knowrightsuk.gumroad.com/l/make_them_pay
England and Wales only — Scotland and Northern Ireland run different systems. This is general legal education about a case on the public record, not advice about your situation. I am a solicitor, but not your solicitor, and I have not seen your papers.
Has a stop like this ever happened to you, or to somebody close to you? Type the county, nothing else.
