OpenAI just published hundreds of AI-generated mathematics papers, claiming its unreleased GPT-6 variant has resolved more than 100 open problems. Some have challenged mathematicians for decades. Others touch the Riemann Hypothesis, Hilbert's Tenth Problem, and conjectures dating back to the 1960s.
But did OpenAI actually solve these problems? And how much of this mathematics has been independently verified?
On October 6, OpenAI released a GitHub repository containing more than 700 AI-generated manuscripts organized into 372 result families, reportedly produced by an internal model trained for roughly six weeks. The system tackled approximately 4,000 mathematical problems, with individual results averaging around three hours of compute.
The numbers are extraordinary. But the headlines leave out some critical distinctions.
A result family isn't necessarily a solved problem. A Lean-verified proof isn't automatically peer-reviewed. And OpenAI's so-called quasi-Riemann result does NOT mean AI solved the Riemann Hypothesis.
What's more interesting is how these discoveries were actually produced.
OpenAI reportedly used thousands of parallel AI agents to explore mathematical problems, including 10,000 concurrent instances targeting the Navier-Stokes equations. Human mathematicians selected problems, evaluated candidate proofs, prepared manuscripts, and used the Lean proof assistant to formally verify hundreds of results.
Some findings appear genuinely significant.
Barnette's Conjecture, open since 1969, now has a proposed complete Lean-verified proof. A non-sofic group construction challenges longstanding assumptions connected to Kaplansky's conjecture. Another result reportedly disproves Connes' Rigidity Conjecture, while an AI-generated unit-distance construction challenges a conjecture associated with Paul Erdős.
Then there's Hilbert's Tenth Problem over the rationals, potentially one of the biggest mathematical breakthroughs in decades. But the crucial limitation is that the claimed proof hasn't been made publicly available for independent examination.
And that's where the real controversy begins.
Mathematicians including Andreas Thom have challenged OpenAI's characterization of earlier research, raising questions about academic credit and the decades of human work underlying these discoveries. Meanwhile, researchers are still determining which results are genuinely new, which have been verified, and which require additional scrutiny.
OpenAI has formed an independent Math and AI Advisory Group involving prominent mathematicians including Timothy Gowers, Edward Witten, and Martin Hairer. But major questions remain about the unreleased model, its training data, the unsuccessful attempts, and whether AI-generated mathematics can be evaluated at the speed it's being produced.
We also compare OpenAI's approach with Google DeepMind, Anthropic's Claude, and existing formal theorem-proving systems like Lean and Coq.
The biggest story may not be that AI has solved mathematics. It may be that AI can now generate mathematical proof candidates faster than human experts can properly evaluate them.
So is this a historic breakthrough in automated mathematical discovery, an overhyped research announcement, or the beginning of an entirely different way of doing mathematics?
Watch the full breakdown to understand what OpenAI actually demonstrated, what remains unverified, and why the mathematical community is paying attention.
