In 2009, by the account of Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, an officer at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency was brought into a vault and shown photographs of a major construction project in Iran's mountains. That September, President Obama announced a covert enrichment facility near Qom. It came to be known as Fordow. Joined by a teammate, the officer spent more than 15 years on that one target, and the two helped shape the GBU-57 into the weapon for it. On June 22, 2025, twelve of them fell on Fordow. Caine called it the largest B-2 operational strike in U.S. history.
