In this film, twenty-four hours before, NASA confirms it will not miss. At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Dr. Ellen Marsh runs the numbers nine times. At 3:46 PM she tells the world: Apophis will strike the San Fernando Valley tomorrow, at 2:46 in the afternoon. Santa Monica beach empties in minutes. The gas stations in the Valley turn into fights. At night the 405 becomes a river of red lights crawling south, while the National Guard drives north into the city. Before dawn, a single rocket lifts off from Vandenberg. At 9:46 AM it hits the asteroid. The whole city cheers. It was not enough. At 2:46 PM, the sky over Los Angeles turns white. Told hour by hour, and by the people who were there, six months later. Apophis is real. Its close pass on April 13, 2029 is real. NASA has ruled out any impact for at least the next century. This film imagines what the last day would look like if it had not.
