Michelangelo Painted God Inside a Human Brain

In 1990, Indiana physician Frank Lynn Meshberger published a paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association arguing that the red cloak surrounding God in Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam is shaped like an anatomically accurate human brain. As a teenager, Michelangelo dissected corpses at the hospital of Santo Spirito in Florence, and his biographer Ascanio Condivi wrote that he stopped only because the work turned his stomach. In 2010, Johns Hopkins neurosurgeons Ian Suk and Rafael Tamargo proposed in the journal Neurosurgery that God’s strangely lumpy neck in the Separation of Light from Darkness resembles a brainstem. Michelangelo never confirmed any of it, and many art historians remain skeptical. Yet the man who painted humanity receiving its mind had already seen the inside of a human head.
