Why the Ethiopian Bible is the Only One That Kept the Full Story

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church traditionally counts 81 books in its Bible, the largest canon in Christianity, compared with 66 in Protestant Bibles and 73 in Catholic ones. Among them is the Book of Enoch, which the Letter of Jude quotes in verses 14 and 15, and whose oldest part, the Book of the Watchers, survives in Aramaic fragments from Qumran Cave 4 dated to around 200–150 BC. Defended by Tertullian and set aside in the West after Augustine, Enoch survived complete only in Ge’ez, until the explorer James Bruce brought three manuscripts to Europe in 1773 and Richard Laurence published the first English translation in 1821. The Ethiopian Bible also preserves Jubilees and the three books of Meqabyan, and Ethiopia is home to the Garima Gospels, radiocarbon-dated among the oldest illustrated Christian manuscripts in the world.
