Why Rome Hated Cleopatra #history #ancientrome #cleopatra

Cleopatra VII belonged to the Ptolemaic dynasty, founded by a Macedonian general of Alexander the Great, and according to Plutarch she was the first of her family to learn Egyptian. Her coins show a strong hooked nose and prominent chin, and Plutarch wrote that her beauty was “not altogether incomparable,” crediting her conversation and voice instead. The famous carpet does not appear in his account, which describes a bedding sack carried to Julius Caesar by Apollodorus. In 32 BC Rome declared war on Cleopatra alone, and even her death by an asp remains uncertain, since Plutarch admits no one knew the truth.
