Description
In November 1922, Howard Carter peered by candlelight into the tomb of Tutankhamun and saw “wonderful things.” Months later, his patron Lord Carnarvon died in Cairo, and newspapers announced the curse of the pharaoh: the lights of Cairo going dark, a dog howling and dying in England, a warning carved at the tomb’s entrance.
In this video we follow the real story, from the forgotten boy king and the most famous discovery in archaeology to the infected mosquito bite that killed Carnarvon, the exclusive Times deal that left rival reporters with nothing to write, and the curse inscription that never existed. We also look at what the numbers show about those who entered the tomb, and why the legend still refuses to die. (Sources: Griffith Institute, Oxford, Carter archive; Herbert Winlock’s survey; Mark Nelson, “The mummy’s curse: historical cohort study,” BMJ, 2002.)
