K-Pop Fan Harassed To Death by Her Own Fandom

Japanese K-Pop influencer Mina Chan was one of the most dedicated ENHYPEN fans, traveling across the world for concerts, fan events, and opportunities to meet the group she loved. Within the fandom, she had become a familiar face, building a following of nearly 100,000 people and a community around the same passion that had become such a huge part of her life. Then, a bouquet of flowers changed everything. After an awkward interaction at a concert was connected to comments made by ENHYPEN member NI-KI, Mina suddenly found herself at the center of a massive online controversy. Her apology was viewed more than 28 million times, but instead of ending the backlash, thousands of strangers continued to pick apart her life, her past, and even whether she deserved to call herself a fan. This is the story of how one misunderstanding spiraled into an online pile-on, how quickly a community can turn against one of its own, and the dangerous reality of mob mentality in K-pop fandom culture. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Dark Silk is dedicated to uncovering true crime cases and internet stories from East Asia and beyond, stories buried in regional news and lost in translation.
