Description

📖 Forty years of dressing women over 60, the whole method, set down in one book https://viviansinclairstyle.com/ There is a dress hanging in your wardrobe right now that you have never worn. I know, because I sold a great many of them. Sylvia Hartnell came to me in the May before her granddaughter's wedding. Deep sage green, heavy crepe, sleeveless, cut beautifully across the shoulder. She stood in front of my long mirror and cried a little. I saw the photographs in September. She had worn a bulky cream cardigan over it, buttoned to the middle, all day, in August, in a marquee, with the sleeves pushed up her forearms because she was too warm. That was my fault, not hers. I had given her a beautiful dress and nothing to do about her arms except hide them. Here is the principle behind all six: your eye does not see an arm, it sees an EDGE. A cardigan does not cover your arm. It draws a line straight across it and adds knitted bulk to the widest part of you. Everything below is the same idea in six different forms. Stop making edges. The 6: • The layer that goes UNDERNEATH, never over the top: the fine second-skin sleeve, why relaxed beats tight, and the tone-matching rule almost everyone gets wrong (warm with warm, cool with cool, and never judge it under a shop light) • The strap is not coverage, it is arithmetic: why a thin strap makes an arm look wider, the three-finger test you can do this afternoon, and why the cardigan actually fails twice over • The layer you put on and never fasten: open linen, open chiffon, and why the button is doing all the damage • Where the sleeve ends: why three-quarter length is the most flattering sleeve there is after 60, why the little cap sleeve is the worst of both, and the puffed sleeve with a band at the bottom to watch for • The armhole, which is the thing I was actually trained to look at: how a high tight armhole makes a roll that was not there before you put the dress on, what a dropped armhole does instead, and the alteration that takes an afternoon and costs very little • Give the eye somewhere better to go: one focal point, never three, and the three zones that work Plus the two-minute test. Take out everything sleeveless and short-sleeved you own tonight and do three things to each one. Three fingers across the strap. Your hand into the armhole. And look at where the sleeve stops. You will find the ones you never wear all fail the same test. And yes, this works in October. The arm does not know what month it is. Everything here works under a short sleeve and under a winter dress, so do not put it away until next summer. The honest part: if there is swelling, and especially swelling on one side and not the other, that belongs to a doctor and not a dressmaker. And if you have had surgery to the breast, the shoulder or the lymph nodes, natural fibres only, nothing that grips or compresses, and whatever your own medical team has told you comes first. This is a styling video, not health advice. 📖 Forty years of dressing women over 60, the whole method, set down in one book https://viviansinclairstyle.com/ Tell me in the comments: is there a dress in your wardrobe that has never once been out of the house, and what stopped it? I read every single one. Subscribe for a new video every week on style, hair and elegance after 60.
