Description
📖 Forty years of dressing women over 60, the whole method, set down in one book
https://viviansinclairstyle.com/
There is a blouse hanging in your wardrobe right now that is one size too big for you, and you did not choose it by accident.
You chose it on a day when you were not feeling your best. You held up the one that fitted, you did not care for what the mirror said, and you reached for the next size up because it felt kinder. I watched women do it from about four feet away, several times a week, for 40 years.
And here is the difficulty with that perfectly understandable decision. A bigger blouse does not read as slimmer. It reads as heavier. So the garment goes home and quietly confirms the very thing that made you reach for it.
I have spent a great many videos telling you what is NOT my trade. The hair belongs to Renata. The feet belong to Harold Pike. The face belongs to Jean Pargeter. THIS ONE IS MINE OUTRIGHT. Cloth, cut, line and proportion were the whole of what I did for four decades, and a blouse is all four at once.
WHY THE BLOUSE AND NOT SOMETHING ELSE: of everything you put on in the morning, it is the garment nearest your face. Your shoes are eye-catching for a moment at the door. Your blouse is in the picture for the entire afternoon.
THE SEVEN:
• THE SHOULDER SEAM. If you take one thing from this video, take this one. It should sit on the point of your shoulder, where the bone turns the corner. If it is hanging below that, down on your upper arm, the blouse is too big no matter what the label says, and EVERY line below it is wrong as well. You cannot fix it with a belt or a tuck. Four seconds to check, and it is the thing I corrected most often in 40 years.
• THE NECKLINE, the three inches doing most of the work. Why a busy collar competes with your face and wins, and the four necklines that send the eye upward instead. Plus a way to settle it at your own mirror in two seconds.
• THE CLOTH. Why a thin knit does not drape over you, it reports on you, and why the same fabric behaved perfectly well at 40. With the window test and the stretch test, both of which you can do standing in a shop.
• WHERE IT ENDS. The hem is the most important full stop you own, because it is the one you can move. Plus the half tuck, which costs nothing and takes four seconds.
• COLOUR, briefly, because it is the one garment sitting up by your face throwing light at it.
• PATTERN. Let the blouse be the loud one, or let everything else be. One loud thing looks deliberate. Two look like an accident.
• DATED DETAIL. Shoulder pads, wide cuffs, shiny buttons. None of it needs throwing away, and I would rather you did not.
AND THE SLEEVE, while your finger is on that shoulder: where a long sleeve should actually finish, and the kindest place for a sleeve to end if you are uncertain about your upper arms.
WHAT TO DO IN A SHOP: take BOTH sizes into the fitting room and put the smaller one on first. Look at the shoulder seam before you look at anything else. Look at yourself from the side as well as the front, which almost nobody does. And ask the woman who works there, because she has watched several hundred people put that same garment on. You are not being any trouble.
THE HONEST PART: none of this is a rule. If you have a blouse you adore that breaks every single thing I have said, wear it and wear it often. I have one that is quite wrong for me by every measure in this video and I have had it for 19 years. What I am giving you is a set of reasons, so that when something feels off in the mirror you can name it instead of blaming yourself for it. It was almost never you. It was the shoulder, or the cloth, or the light.
And please do not go and replace anything this week. That is the opposite of the point.

Tell me in the comments whether you found one on your rail with the shoulder seam in the wrong place. I am fairly certain most of you will. I read every single one.
