Description

📖 Forty years of dressing women over 60, the whole method, set down in one book https://viviansinclairstyle.com/ A woman came into my shop once and asked me, with real embarrassment, whether I thought she was too old for jeans. She was 66. She had a pair on at the time. She had been wearing them about nine years, she told me, and lately she had started to feel that people were looking. Nobody was looking. She had caught sight of herself in a shop window, felt that something was wrong, and reached for the only explanation anybody had ever given her, which was her age. It is always the first thing we are handed and it is almost never the answer. I asked her one question: did she know what the RISE of a trouser was. She did not. Almost nobody does. And that single piece of information was the whole difference between those jeans and the pair she went home in. THE MEASUREMENT: the rise is the distance from the crotch seam up to the top of the waistband at the front. That is it. It decides more about how jeans look on you than the size, the brand or the price, and it is almost never printed anywhere. Why it matters after 60: a low rise puts the waistband across the widest, softest part of your hip, removes your waist from the picture, and leaves your middle with nothing to sit against. A higher rise sits at your natural waist, which is the narrowest part of almost every woman alive, and the leg below it reads as several inches longer. HOW TO FIND YOURS, in two minutes: take the trousers you feel best in, lay them flat, do up the button, and measure from the crotch seam straight up to the top of the waistband. Write it down. For most women over 60 it is around 11 to 13 inches. At 25 a great many of us were wearing 7 or 8. That is the whole of what changed. Not you. The trouser. THE CUTS: • Straight leg — the one. Why it should SKIM rather than grip • Slim straight / tapered — good if you are shorter, and how to tell it from a skinny with better manners • Wide leg — genuinely excellent after 60 and the kindest cut on a soft middle, with one condition about length • Bootcut — honestly, this one has quietly stopped, and why • Skinny — not because of your legs. Because of what it does to the silhouette, and the elastane THE THING NOBODY MENTIONS: stretch. Anything above about 2% elastane fits beautifully in the shop and has gone baggy at the knee by lunchtime. That is the tired look people blame on themselves. Plus the sideways pull test that tells you in the shop without reading a label. Also: the washes that work and the whiskering that does not; the hem that shows an inch of ankle and the three ways to get there; the column of colour; structure on top and the front tuck; and the third piece that turns clothing into an outfit. THE HONEST PART: do not replace your jeans this week. If you have a pair that fits, the fastest improvement is to have them shortened — and ask for the ORIGINAL HEM to be kept and put back on, so the faded edge stays where it belongs instead of a flat new machine hem announcing the alteration across a room. 📖 Forty years of dressing women over 60, the whole method, set down in one book https://viviansinclairstyle.com/ Tell me in the comments what your rise turns out to be, and whether anybody has ever once mentioned it to you in a shop. I am fairly sure of the answer and it is the reason I made this. I read every single one. Subscribe for a new video every week on style, hair and elegance after 60.
