Description

On a bluff above Lake Michigan sits a neighborhood full of Gilded Age mansions that should not still exist. Brewing money, crane money, tanning money, department store money, all of it built into stone and slate more than a hundred years ago, and almost all of it still standing exactly where it went up. In a city that tore down or gave away nearly every other street of mansions it ever had, this one bluff kept everything. The Pabst money, the Schlitz money, the Harnischfeger money, the great fortunes of Milwaukee climbed up here and built, generation after generation, next to a park designed by the man who built Central Park. And it did not survive by luck. At one specific moment, the people who lived here did something the families on every other rich street in the city failed to do in time. This is the story of the enclave that won, the fortunes that built it, and the one decision that saved every house on the bluff while the mansions came down everywhere else.
