Description

Ten places in Wisconsin the mob used to control, from the north woods of Hurley to one quiet restaurant table in Milwaukee. On a March morning in 1980, federal agents took a sledgehammer to a door on Milwaukee's East Side while a second team opened a hotel safe across town. What they found in that safe tied Wisconsin's own crime family to a casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The Milwaukee mob didn't hide in mansions. It worked out of ordinary places, and most of them are still standing. This countdown starts up north, in the Silver Street taverns of Hurley and a stone lodge in Sawyer County that sold tickets on the Al Capone name for decades, even though the title records tell another story. From there it heads south to a Lake Geneva hotel where the FBI let Baby Face Nelson slip away, the Greenbush neighborhood of Madison that Prohibition turned into Death Corners, and Milwaukee's old Italian Third Ward before the freeway came through. Then it gets closer to the family itself. A Brady Street bakery that got bombed for refusing to pay. A farmhouse on an Air Force base the government never finished, and the jukebox man found in its basement. The Farwell Avenue storefront an undercover FBI agent rented, working alongside the agent the world knows as Donnie Brasco. A parking garage where a car bomb went off one June morning in 1978. Every stop comes from FBI files, court records, and Wisconsin's own newspapers. Real names, real dates, and what stands at each place today. The last stop is where the Las Vegas money came home.
