Description
In the early nineteenth century, a corridor of Upstate New York became the birthplace of five distinct American religious movements within just a few decades. Two of them, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Seventh-day Adventist Church, grew into global institutions numbering in the tens of millions. The Jehovah's Witnesses built a tightly organized worldwide network through mandatory evangelism. Yet Christian Science declined to a fraction of its former size, and the Shakers, once thousands strong across eighteen communities, now number exactly three members. In this documentary, we trace the origins of each movement, from Joseph Smith's vision near Palmyra to William Miller's failed prophecy, Charles Taze Russell's Bible study in Pennsylvania, Mary Baker Eddy's teachings on spiritual healing, and the celibate communities of the United Society of Believers. We examine the demographic, institutional, and missionary factors that determined which movements expanded globally and which nearly vanished. This is a balanced, historically grounded look at religious survival in America. We are not here to argue which faith is correct. We are here to understand the history.
