Description
Few congregations can say exactly when their Sunday evening service ended, yet across Baptist, Pentecostal, mainline, and independent churches, the six o'clock hour was quietly removed from the signboard. This documentary investigates the history of a tradition that once defined the Lord's Day, and the forces that brought it to a close.
Using church history, survey research, and the work of sociologists of American religion, we examine five developments: the growing distance between families and their churches as suburbs expanded, the competition from Sunday night television, professional football, and loosened Sunday closing laws, the small group movement popularized by church growth leaders, the strain on pastors and staff as churches concentrated energy on Sunday morning, and the compressed weekend of dual-income households and youth sports.
We also look at how Catholic and Orthodox traditions met similar pressures through Saturday vigil Mass and evening Vespers, and what the story reveals about how a shared habit slowly becomes a private choice.
This is a balanced, research-based look at a quiet turning point in American religious life, offered without defending the old schedule or criticizing the new one.
