Description

In 1780, a newspaper publisher in Gloucester, England opened a school that met only on Sundays to teach poor children to read. Two centuries later, many American churches run children's programs that look more like family entertainment centers. What changed, and what did it cost? This documentary follows the history of Sunday School and children's ministry from the Industrial Revolution to the modern suburban megachurch. We trace how catechisms and memory work shaped generations of young believers, how the seeker-sensitive movement redesigned Sunday morning around the needs of busy families, and how new curriculum kits replaced older denominational teaching. We also examine the sociological research behind Moralistic Therapeutic Deism, the rise of secure check-in systems and themed play areas, and the growing debate over whether the children's wing is a ministry, a convenience, or both. Along the way, we compare Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox approaches to religious formation, and ask what the evidence really says about thin childhood teaching and later disaffiliation. This is a fair, research-based look at a quiet transformation in American church life, told without arguing for or against any denomination or style of worship.
