Description
On March 19, 1987, Jim Bakker resigned from PTL, one of the largest religious television networks in America. Within a few years, three of the most recognized preachers in the country faced scandal, court trials, and congressional attention, all in front of millions of viewers. How did a boom built on faith and technology come apart so quickly? This documentary investigates.
We trace the rise of the satellite pulpit and the growth of prosperity-style fundraising, then examine four turning points: the fall of PTL and the fraud conviction that followed, Jimmy Swaggart's televised confession and removal by the Assemblies of God, Oral Roberts and his controversial eight million dollar appeal, and the aftermath that reshaped public trust in religious broadcasting.
Along the way, we explore the role of investigative journalism, the limits of denominational oversight, congressional hearings on tax-exempt finances, and the creation of new accountability standards among evangelical ministries. We also look at Max Weber's idea of charismatic authority to explain why so many ministries grew faster than any structure able to hold them accountable.
This is a fair, research-based look at a defining chapter of American religious history, drawing on court records, newspaper investigations, and historians, without arguing for or against any faith or denomination.
