Could the ANC’s dispute over IEC candidate lists become the breaking point for South Africa’s Government of National Unity?
In this video, I discuss the Constitutional Court ruling on the ANC’s election candidate submissions and Fikile Mbalula’s response to the DA and Freedom Front Plus. At the centre of this dispute is a simple question: should election deadlines and rules apply equally to every political party?
I explain why I believe Mbalula’s framing of the court challenge matters beyond this case. By presenting the ANC’s GNU partners as opposing voters’ constitutional rights, could he be laying the groundwork for the ANC to leave the coalition?
I also discuss judicial impartiality, accountability, freedom of expression and what I see as the unequal application of the law in South Africa.
Most importantly, I explore whether the ANC could move towards a coalition with the EFF and MK Party—the so-called “doomsday coalition”—and what that could mean for South Africa’s political and economic future.
This is my analysis of the warning signs, the ANC’s political messaging and why I believe the GNU’s future is increasingly uncertain.
