Description

Donate: https://stub.africa/@accolonn Is the ANC heading towards its inevitable end? South Africa’s ruling party faces declining voter support, internal divisions and growing frustration over the economy and service delivery. But could the roots of its decline stretch all the way back to 1994? In this video, I explain why I believe the ANC’s greatest challenge is its transition from a liberation movement to a governing political party. Drawing on Corné Mulder’s comparison with the decline of the National Party, I examine how liberation credentials, economic growth and political loyalty helped sustain the ANC—and why those foundations are weakening. From Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki to Jacob Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa, I discuss the ANC’s changing fortunes, voter apathy, BEE, affirmative action, and the growing fragmentation of South African politics through parties such as the EFF and MK Party. I also explore South Africa’s cultural diversity and the tensions between the ANC’s ideological ambitions and what ordinary South Africans want: work, opportunity and the freedom to build their lives. My argument is that the ANC’s problems go deeper than individual leaders or election results. Could the party tear itself apart within the next two election cycles?
