Description

In 1972, one Indiana congregation operated the largest Sunday School in the world, built almost entirely on fleets of yellow buses collecting children from neighborhoods their own parents rarely visited. This documentary traces the rise and fall of the American church bus ministry, once one of the most aggressive outreach strategies in Protestant history. We examine how the Bus Captain model grew out of the Church Growth Movement, how the Federal Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 quietly dismantled the volunteer driver pool that sustained it, and how rising insurance liability made the old model financially impossible to continue. We also explore the theological shift that followed, as churches moved away from reaching unaccompanied children and toward attracting whole families through the modern megachurch model. This is a fair, research based look at a ministry that shaped American evangelicalism for two decades, and the legal, cultural, and strategic forces that brought it to an end.
