Description
Calypso loved a mortal so completely that she tried to make him forget he was ever meant to leave.
After ten years at Troy and years more adrift on the way home, Odysseus lost everything. Warned twice not to touch the cattle of the sun god Helios, his men slaughtered them anyway on the island of Thrinacia. Zeus answered with a lightning bolt that split their ship apart. Every man drowned. Odysseus alone survived, clinging to a broken mast for nine days before the current carried him, half-dead, onto the shore of a small island called Ogygia.
This is where Calypso finds him.
She was a nymph, daughter of the Titan Atlas, and she nursed the stranger back to health and kept him. She offered him what no other mortal in the poem is ever offered: immortality and eternal youth, forever, at her side, if he would only stay. He said no. Every day for seven years he sat on the shore and wept, staring out at the sea, choosing an old age and a wife he might never see again over a goddess and forever. Homer says Calypso was the more beautiful of the two. It made no difference to him.
His grief reached Olympus before he ever left the island. Athena pleaded his case before Zeus, and Zeus sent Hermes across the water to order Calypso to let him go. She did not go quietly, she accused the gods of hunting down every goddess who dared love a mortal man while granting themselves the same freedom without punishment. Then she obeyed anyway. She helped Odysseus build his raft with her own hands, stocked it with wine, water, and bread, sent him off with a fair wind, and never saw him again. Days later, Poseidon spotted the raft and tore it apart in a storm, one last obstacle before Odysseus, barely alive, finally washed up in the land of the Phaeacians.
She could have kept him forever, young and undying, and never had to watch him go. She let him go anyway.
I wrote this piece in Homeric Greek the epic dialect of the original poem, not Modern Greek sung as a slow, haunting voice, lyre beneath it, ocean underneath that and other modern instrument. Built with the help of AI and human editing.
This is part of the ODYSSEY series, a song for every major encounter in Homer's Odyssey, each one built on close reading of the original text and the real mythic detail behind it.
