After the fall of Troy, Odysseus spends ten years trying to get home to Ithaca, and almost none of it goes smoothly. He loses men raiding the Cicones, drifts into the land of the Lotus Eaters, blinds the Cyclops Polyphemus and earns a curse from Poseidon for it, gets a bag of winds from Aeolus that his own crew opens by mistake within sight of home, and loses most of his fleet to the cannibal Laestrygonians. The witch Circe turns his men into pigs before becoming an ally, and eventually sends him to the underworld to consult the dead prophet Tiresias about how to survive the rest of the trip. On the way back he survives the Sirens, loses six men to Scylla, and watches the rest of his crew die after they eat the forbidden cattle of the sun god against every warning he gave them. Odysseus alone survives, washing up on Calypso's island, where he is kept for seven years before the gods finally order his release. He is shipwrecked again almost immediately after and found half drowned by the Phaeacians. At the Phaeacian court, the blind singer Demodocus performs three songs, the last one about the Trojan Horse that Odysseus himself planned. Hearing his own war turned into a song breaks him, and he finally reveals who he is. He tells the court everything above, and the Phaeacians send him home on one of their remarkable ships. He falls asleep during the crossing and wakes up on Ithaca without recognizing it, right where this series currently leaves off.
