Description

Constantine the Great: the Roman emperor whose victory at one bridge changed the religious course of the entire empire. Constantine rose through a fractured tetrarchy, one of several men claiming the title of emperor, and consolidated power over the western half of Rome after his victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD a battle he credited to a vision of the Christian cross. The following year, the Edict of Milan established tolerance for Christianity across the empire, ending centuries of persecution. Twelve years later, at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, Constantine presided over the first major effort to unify Christian doctrine. He spent his final years building a new capital in the east: Constantinople. This is the reign that took Christianity from a persecuted sect to the emperor's own faith and reshaped Rome for the next thousand years. #romanhistory #ancientrome #spqr #byzantine #byzantineempire
