Description

Anduril announced yesterday that it's putting $3.7 billion of its own money into a shipyard. The Navy added a contract worth up to $2.9 billion, bringing the total to $6.6 billion. Trump flew to Baltimore County for the announcement. The site is Sparrows Point, a two million square foot facility they're calling Arsenal-2. Hiring starts 2029, operations in 2030, 3,100 direct jobs and more than 11,000 indirect. The reason behind it is a number most people haven't seen. The Navy wants two Virginia-class attack submarines a year. The industry has been delivering about 1.1 to 1.2. That gap has persisted for years, driven by a shortage of experienced workers and late materials. One of the specific bottlenecks right now is torpedo tubes. Anduril has already been prototyping those at a facility in California and plans to move that work to Baltimore once Arsenal-2 is running, then scale up to full hull sections. Worth knowing: the deal came days after co-founder Palmer Luckey was named to a Pentagon future weapons task force alongside Elon Musk. Reporters raised conflict-of-interest questions and the Pentagon dismissed them. Anduril says payments are tied to production outcomes, so the company carries most of the execution risk. A software company building submarine parts is a strange sentence. That's roughly the point.
