Description
Terence Tao won the Fields Medal in 2006, became UCLA's youngest ever full professor at 24, and is still the youngest person to win gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad. The New York Times wrote that many regard him as the finest mathematician of his generation.
So when he says his field's age of heroes is ending, it's worth hearing out. Blackboards, imported chalk, one professor advising one grad student at a time. He thinks math is heading where physics and biology already went, toward big teams working at scale.
He's already run the experiment. The Equational Theories Project put 34 authors onto 4,694 equational laws and resolved all 22,028,942 implications between them. Two months to work out informally, five more to verify every line in Lean. The paper came out last December.
The surprising part is what actually did the work. Modern AI barely featured. Classical automated provers handled most of the cases and Lean checked the proofs. Tao expects AI to carry more of the next one.
The industrial era arrived before the robots did.
