Description

On May 11, 1905, Sam Shubert was fatally injured when his express train struck a boxcar of blasting powder near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and his older brother Lee turned grief into an empire. This video tells the full story: the 1882 arrival in Syracuse; the 1900 Herald Square Theatre lease; Sarah Bernhardt's 1906 circus tent in Dallas; the Sam S. Shubert Memorial Theater of 1913; the 1933 buyback at ten cents on the dollar; the 1955 Supreme Court ruling and 1956 consent decree. It ends where the story stands now — seventeen Broadway theaters, and $45 million given in 2026 by the foundation named for Sam.
