WHY DID JESUS SAY "YOU ARE GODS"? THE HIDDEN TRUTH BEHIND JOHN 10:34

Jesus once said three words that sound like they don't belong in the Bible: "You are gods." Teachers today use that line to tell you that you're a little god — that there's divinity inside you, that you can speak your reality into being. So did Jesus really say you're a god? He said it. It's right there in John 10:34. But what He actually meant is almost the exact opposite of how it gets used. Most people have no idea what's actually happening in this passage. Jesus had just said "I and the Father are one," and the crowd picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy — for a mere man "making Himself God." And His response? He quotes a forgotten line from Psalm 82: "I said, you are gods." Cults quote it. New Age teachers quote it. And a lot of Christians have run into it and quietly wondered — wait, does the Bible say I'm a god? In this study we trace it line by line: • The stones — proof that His enemies knew exactly what He was claiming • The verse He quoted — Psalm 82, and what "elohim" really means • Who the "gods" actually were — corrupt judges with God-given authority who would "die like men" • The argument Jesus is really making — a "lesser to greater" move that proves His OWN deity • What it does NOT mean — debunking the "you're a little god" lie for good • What it DOES mean for you — something far better than being a god Here's the heart of it. The "gods" in Psalm 82 were the villains of the story — corrupt human judges who represented God's justice and abused it, and God said they would fall and die like mere men. So "you are gods" was never a promise of divinity. It was a rebuke. And when Jesus quotes it, He's making a brilliant argument: if Scripture could call those failing judges "gods" in a delegated sense, then it is not blasphemy for the One the Father actually consecrated and sent into the world to call Himself the Son of God. The verse everyone uses to say "you're a god" is actually Jesus proving He is the one true God in the flesh. And the good news is better than godhood. You were never meant to become a god — that's the oldest lie there is, the serpent's whisper in the garden: "you will be like God." What God actually offers you is to become His child. Not a god — a son, a daughter, adopted into the family, a co-heir with Christ. The false gods grasped for divinity and fell. The true God came down and died like a man, so you could be brought home forever. He arose. He came down. He died. So you could come home. 📖 Chapters / timestamps below. 🔔 Subscribe for more deep-dive Bible studies — the Bible is deep, it doesn't have to be complicated.
