Description

There is a prophecy in the Old Testament that did something no other prophecy has ever done: it gave a timeline. More than five hundred years before Jesus was born, the angel Gabriel gave the prophet Daniel a countdown — seventy "weeks" — that pinned the coming of the Messiah to a specific window of history, and then said He would be "cut off." Killed. And it landed squarely on the era of Jesus. This is one of the most astonishing — and most argued-about — passages in the whole Bible. So in this study I'm handling it honestly: I won't hand you a tidy calculator that spits out an exact date, because the precise math is genuinely debated. Instead, I'll show you the part that is stunning and hard to explain away — the shape of the prophecy, and how unmistakably it points at Jesus. Here's what we walk through: • The setting — Daniel, in exile, praying, when Gabriel arrives with a far bigger answer • What "seventy weeks" really means — "seventy sevens," a 490-year span • The goal of the countdown — "to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness" • "The Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself" — the gospel, in one Old Testament line • When it landed — why the count reaches the era of Jesus, however you reasonably run it • The sealed detail — the temple destroyed in 70 AD, which locks the timing in place • The debated final week — handled fairly, both views explained Here's the heart of it. Gabriel said the whole countdown was to deal with sin once and for all. Then, in the middle of the prophecy, he said the Messiah would be "cut off" — killed — "but not for Himself." Five hundred years before the cross, that single line describes a Messiah who dies not for His own guilt, but in the place of others. That is the gospel. And the sequence Gabriel gave — rebuild the city, the Messiah comes, the Messiah is cut off, then the temple is destroyed — requires the Messiah to have come and died before Jerusalem fell in 70 AD. The temple has been gone for nearly two thousand years. So either the Messiah came in the first century, or the prophecy failed. And a carpenter from Nazareth was crucified in Jerusalem, in exactly that window, before the city fell. This kind of prophecy does not happen by accident. It's the fingerprint of a God who knows the end from the beginning — who wrote the arrival of His Son into history's calendar centuries before He came. And a God who kept that appointment across five hundred years is a God you can trust with the parts of your future you can't yet see. 📖 Chapters / timestamps below. 🔔 Subscribe for more deep-dive Bible studies — the Bible is deep, it doesn't have to be complicated.
