Description

At exactly noon — the brightest hour of the day — the sun went out. For three straight hours, darkness covered the whole land while Jesus hung on the cross. It was not an eclipse (the astronomy proves it can't have been). So what really happened in the 3 hours of darkness on the cross? Most people read right past this moment. But those three hours are the very center of the crucifixion — and what was happening inside that darkness is the whole reason Jesus came. Once you see what the darkness actually meant, you'll never read the cross the same way again. In this study we trace it honestly, line by line: • The timing — why it fell at the sixth hour (noon), the brightest possible moment • Was it an eclipse? — the honest, factual answer (a solar eclipse is astronomically impossible at Passover's full moon) • What darkness at noon MEANS — the ninth plague of Egypt, and a stunning prophecy in Amos • "My God, why have You forsaken Me?" — Psalm 22, and the mystery of the forsakenness (handled carefully) • The ninth hour — how Jesus died at the exact moment the Passover lambs were slain • The torn veil — and the door to God that swung open Here's the heart of it. In the Bible, darkness at noon means one thing: judgment. It fell on Egypt before the death of the firstborn. The prophet Amos foretold "the sun going down at noon" and "mourning for an only son." And on the cross, the judgment that should have fallen on the whole guilty world fell instead, in three hours of blackness, on one innocent man. Underneath that darkness, the sin of the world was laid on Jesus, and the full cup of God's wrath was poured out — on Him, so it would never be poured out on us. And that's why the cry from the dark is so precious. "My God, why have You forsaken Me?" He was forsaken — He entered the God-forsakenness that our sin deserved — so that you would never, ever have to be. The Light of the world let Himself be swallowed by darkness so that we who sat in darkness could step into everlasting light. And three days later, the stone rolled away. The darkness of the cross was never the end of the story. It was the price of the dawn. 📖 Chapters / timestamps below. 🔔 Subscribe for more deep-dive Bible studies — the Bible is deep, it doesn't have to be complicated.
