Description

What It Was REALLY Like to Live Inside the Real Downton Abbey Subscribe to the channel: @LostGrandeurUK Highclere Castle has somewhere between 200 and 300 rooms, and in its great years almost none of them cleaned, heated or lit themselves. The house the world knows as the real Downton Abbey was raised in the 1840s to look centuries old, and it ran on a hidden army of servants, some earning as little as £5 a year, while the mistress of the house had £12,000 a year settled on her by a Rothschild banker. In 1895 it hosted the future Edward VII for a shooting weekend that cost a fortune; in 1914 its state rooms were filled with hospital beds; in 1922 its owner found the tomb of Tutankhamun. But the part of the house the world fell in love with on screen is the one part of Highclere the cameras never actually filmed. Subscribe to the channel: @lostgrandeuruk In this video, we talk about what life was really like inside Highclere Castle, the real Downton Abbey, including the two worlds divided by the green baize door, the hidden hierarchy of servants and their wages and hours, the daily choreography of fires, bells and back stairs, the shooting season and the 1895 visit of the Prince of Wales, Almina's transformation of the house into a First World War hospital, the fifth Earl's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb and the curse legend that followed his death, the hidden Egyptian cupboards found in 1987, and the truth behind the below stairs that Downton Abbey built on a soundstage in Ealing. 🔔 Subscribe so the next story from behind Britain's great walls reaches you first. 💬 Comment where you are watching from, and tell me whether you would rather have lived above the stairs at Highclere or below them. 📢 Share this with anyone who loves Downton, on Facebook, Reddit, or a group chat, you are the reason this channel keeps opening these doors.
