Description
In April 1981, 23-year-old Yolanda Herrera left Johnny’s Inn in the
Universal City area of Texas and was believed to be walking home.
She never made it.
Two days later, children walking to school found Yolanda off East
Aviation Drive. Her murder would remain unsolved for more than four
decades.
Investigators preserved crucial biological evidence, but even when
advances in DNA testing finally produced the profile of an unknown man,
they still had no name. Then the case reached an unusual turning point:
with very little evidence remaining, investigators were advised to stop
testing and wait for technology to improve.
That decision would eventually help change the case.
Advanced DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy later led
investigators to Kelly Lee Brower Sr. in Arizona. Authorities say a
direct DNA comparison tied Brower to evidence from Yolanda’s case, and
Universal City Police say he confessed during an interview with
investigators.
On August 19, 2026, Brower was arrested and charged with capital murder.
He has not been convicted, and the case remains subject to the court
process.
In this Root of Crime documentary, we follow Yolanda Herrera’s 1981
Texas cold case from her final known movements, through decades of
unanswered questions, to the DNA evidence and investigative work that
finally led police to a suspect 45 years later.
