Description

On July 24, 1996, seven-year-old Morgan Jade Violi was abducted in broad daylight from the Colony Apartments in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Witnesses saw the man who took her. Police had a description of the driver and the maroon Chevrolet van he used. Two days later, the stolen van was found abandoned in Tennessee. Morgan was not inside. Nearly three months later, her remains were found near White House, Tennessee. A fiber recovered from Morgan’s hair later linked her to the van, but investigators still could not identify the man who had been driving it. For almost 30 years, the case remained unsolved. Morgan’s father, Glen Violi, lived for years under public suspicion. Morgan’s mother, Stacey, and her older sisters, Heather and Nikki, continued speaking about the child they remembered while investigators searched for an answer. Then old evidence from the van finally produced something new. The FBI developed a DNA profile from a preserved hair recovered from the van’s floorboards. A CODIS search returned an association with Robert Scott Froberg. That name opened an entirely different 1996 timeline. Investigators discovered Froberg had escaped custody, crossed multiple states, encountered another seven-year-old child, and had been back in police custody less than a month after Morgan disappeared. In February 2026, investigators questioned Froberg. According to the federal complaint, he admitted abducting Morgan and told investigators what happened after the van left Bowling Green. On July 22, 2026, Froberg pleaded guilty in federal court to kidnapping resulting in death. As of September 23, 2026, sentencing is scheduled for November 2, 2026, in Bowling Green. Under the plea agreement, Froberg has agreed to a life sentence if the court accepts the agreement. This Root of Crime documentary follows Morgan’s story from the day she disappeared through the search, the recovered van, the decades of uncertainty, the evidence preserved from 1996, the 2026 DNA break
