OREGON 1994 Cold Case REOPENED - Her Daughter Knew Something Was Wrong

In February 1994, 85-year-old Veta Hardebeck was found dead at her rural home in Gaston, Oregon. At first, the circumstances left open the possibility of a medical event or accident. But Veta’s daughter, Caroline Ledbury, said something about the firewood around her mother did not make sense. An autopsy established that Veta’s death was a homicide. For more than three decades, the case remained unresolved. Then in 2025, Washington County received case-specific funding that allowed investigators to send preserved evidence for advanced DNA testing and reopen the original investigation with fresh eyes. In August 2026, Randall Joseph Gall was charged with second-degree murder in Veta Hardebeck’s death. Investigators say they believe Gall lived on a neighboring property at the time of the 1994 homicide. Gall has pleaded not guilty, and the prosecution remains pending. This Root of Crime documentary follows Veta’s life, Caroline’s memories, the original investigation, the long cold years, the renewed forensic work, and the evidence that finally brought the case back into court. Root of Crime tells carefully researched, victim-centered cold-case stories built around the people affected, the evidence that survived, and the investigative work that brought old cases back into the light. ================================================== SHORT DESCRIPTION / FIRST 200 CHARACTERS ================================================== In 1994, 85-year-old Veta Hardebeck was found dead at her rural Oregon home.
