Description

In June 2002, 20-year-old Sabrina “Bree” Kahler left Erie, Pennsylvania, to go swimming with David Heck, the cousin of her boyfriend. A Pennsylvania State Police trooper later saw Sabrina alive with Heck at the Tasty Twist ice cream stand. Heck told investigators that he eventually dropped Sabrina at West Erie Plaza and gave her money to see a movie. Police could never confirm that she made it there. Sabrina disappeared without a trace. For more than two decades, investigators searched for answers while her body remained missing. Then previously reluctant witnesses began giving testimony to a statewide grand jury. Prosecutors now allege Sabrina was taken to the Fairview Gravel Pits instead of the movie theater. A fisherman said he heard a woman scream and later believed the man he saw leaving the wooded area resembled Heck. Another witness, Douglas Heim, testified that he helped move and bury Sabrina’s body at Elk Creek Access. Prosecutors also cited additional statements from other witnesses and a former cellmate. On September 21, 2026, David Heck was arrested in Indiana and charged in connection with Sabrina Kahler’s disappearance and death, including murder, rape and kidnapping charges. Heck has been charged, not convicted, and the prosecution remains pending. Twenty-four years after Sabrina disappeared, authorities say they now have an account of what happened after her last confirmed sighting. But one question remains unanswered. Where is Sabrina? This Root of Crime documentary follows Sabrina Kahler’s disappearance, the movie-theater story investigators could never verify, the witnesses who eventually came forward, the renewed cold-case investigation, and the 2026 arrest that changed a case which had remained unresolved for more than two decades. #SabrinaKahler #ColdCase #RootOfCrime
