Description
🏛️ Angkor, 1150 AD: at the height of the Khmer Empire under king Suryavarman II, step inside Angkor Wat the year its five sandstone towers were finished, when the capital was one of the largest pre-industrial cities ever documented. AI reconstruction from historical studies and records.
This documentary reconstructs what daily life looked like inside one of the great temples of Angkor around 1150, when the imperial capital sheltered several hundred thousand inhabitants and Angkor Wat had just been raised as the state sanctuary dedicated to Vishnu. Millions of sandstone blocks quarried from the Kulen massif, laid without mortar, formed a stone image of Mount Meru surrounded by a vast moat and reached by a naga-lined causeway.
⛩️ Inside the compound, brahmin priests performed the daily awakening of Vishnu with offerings of cooked rice, sesame oil, incense, cloth and consecrated water, reciting Sanskrit hymns. Around them moved thousands of dependents: dancers, musicians, weavers, goldsmiths, scribes, cooks, guards and cultivators of the temple estates, documented by the great Angkorian inscriptions.
📜 The film also traces the wider Khmer world: the hydraulic civilisation of the barays, the provincial sanctuaries linked to the capital, and the transition, decades away, toward Theravada Buddhism that would reshape these monuments.
