Description
🏛️ Baghdad, year 850 AD: at the height of the Abbasid Caliphate, inside the Bayt al-Hikma — the House of Wisdom — Greek medicine, Indian mathematics, Persian astronomy and Arabic learning converged in the largest translation movement the medieval world had ever seen. 📜 Step inside the Round City of al-Mansur, reconstructed with AI from historical studies and records.
In this reconstruction we walk through a ninth-century Baghdad that may have housed more than half a million inhabitants, where booksellers called warraqun ran bustling stalls in al-Karkh, where the recently mastered technique of papermaking transformed the economy of knowledge, and where scholars from Khorasan, al-Andalus, Harran and the former Sasanian lands worked side by side inside a complex of libraries and observatories founded by Caliph al-Mansur. ✨
We explore the translation workshops where Hunayn ibn Ishaq rendered Galen and Hippocrates into Arabic, the mathematical halls shaped by al-Khwarizmi — father of algebra — and the circles of al-Kindi, the philosopher of the Arabs. Under Caliph al-Mutawakkil the Mihna inquisition was quietly being dismantled, and the ink of Baghdad was preparing to feed, three centuries later, the libraries of Toledo and the European Renaissance. 🌙
