Description
🏛️ Tokyo, 13 September 1912: Emperor Meiji's state funeral moves through the capital under torches and electric arc lamps, closing an era that carried Japan from feudal realm to industrial empire — reconstructed with AI from historical records.
Emperor Meiji died on 30 July 1912, after a reign of forty-five years. 📜 The Charter Oath of 1868 opened Japan to the world; the old feudal domains were dissolved into prefectures; a conscript army and modern navy replaced the swords of the samurai; and the Constitution of 1889 placed the emperor at the sacred centre of the state. Victory over Qing China in 1895, the dramatic defeat of Imperial Russia in 1905, and the annexation of Korea in 1910 confirmed Japan's entry into the circle of great powers.
⛩️ On the night of 13 September, hundreds of thousands knelt in silence as the sokaren, the sacred ox-drawn carriage, bore the imperial coffin from the palace to the Aoyama Parade Ground. Shinto priests of the Imperial Household Agency intoned ancient norito; courtiers in Heian sokutai walked beside officers in European uniforms. Prince Arthur of Connaught and envoys of Russia, France, Germany and China stood among the mourners. General Nogi Maresuke and his wife Shizuko performed junshi, following their lord in death. The emperor was finally interred at Fushimi-Momoyama in Kyoto.
