Description

Walked into a 1960s church sanctuary recently (well, in the research) and realized something odd: the United Methodist Church had over 10 million members in 1968. Today a lot of those same sanctuaries sit mostly empty. Meanwhile a few miles away, a rented hall is running out of chairs. So I spent weeks digging into why nondenominational and Pentecostal churches — especially the Assemblies of God — keep growing while the Southern Baptist Convention, the Episcopal Church, and a few other major denominations keep shrinking. Turns out it's not really about comfort or entertainment, which surprised me. Dean Kelley wrote about this back in 1972, and even he wasn't thrilled with what he found. This isn't about ranking whose faith is right — every denomination here has done real good for a long time. Just following the records and letting them speak.
