Description
In 2011, a bankruptcy judge ordered the sale of the Crystal Cathedral — an eighteen-million-dollar glass church — for $57.5 million. Today, one number gets attached to stories like this everywhere: $165 billion, the figure headlines use to claim American churches are running out of money. This documentary tests that number against the actual record.
We trace what it really is (a what-if built on the gap between a 10% tithe and what Americans actually give, not a real budget shortfall), what Lifeway Research's 2024 data actually shows about the roughly 4,000 Protestant churches closing each year, and what Thom Rainer found when he studied a dozen closed congregations for his book Autopsy of a Deceased Church: most still had money in the bank. We also follow the Crystal Cathedral itself, from bankruptcy to its new life as the Catholic Diocese of Orange's Christ Cathedral, dedicated in 2019.
The real pattern isn't a national cash shortage — it's smaller, older, mainline congregations losing people faster than money, while insurance costs and aging buildings push the ones already struggling over the edge. 💰

If your own congregation had to choose between protecting its building or its budget, which would it guard first? 💬 Tell us in the comments.
