Description
About 40 million American adults used to attend church regularly and no longer do — roughly 16 out of every 100 adults in the country. In January 2024, researcher Michael Graham said most left for "really pedestrian reasons." This documentary traces all eight.
Based on The Great Dechurching (2023) by Jim Davis and Michael Graham, with political scientists Ryan Burge and Paul Djupe, we walk through the eight most common reasons Americans gave for leaving: moving, inconvenient scheduling, family change, COVID-19, not fitting in, political disagreement, hurt and betrayal, and doubt — in that order of how often they were named. We follow the survey itself (1,043 Americans screened, 4,099 questioned on why), where the authors' own bias as pastors and researchers is acknowledged, and where critics' pushback is given real space.
The finding that surprised even the researchers: roughly three in four left for casual, logistical reasons, not a crisis of belief — and 97% of exvangelicals who left most deliberately still say Jesus is the Son of God. More than half say they'd come back if they found a true expression of Christianity. ⛪
