Description
In 2003, researchers sat down with 267 American teenagers from Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, and Latter-day Saint homes and asked what they believed about God. Almost all of them liked their churches. Almost none of them could explain what those churches actually taught.
This documentary traces what sociologist Christian Smith named Moralistic Therapeutic Deism — a quiet pattern of belief (a good God, be nice, feel good, call on Him only when you need Him) that researchers found running through American churches regardless of denomination. We follow it back further than the 2003 study, to Norman Vincent Peale's 1952 bestseller The Power of Positive Thinking, and to sociologist Will Herberg's 1955 warning that Americans were treating religion mainly as a way of belonging. We also look at a 2025 Lifeway/Ligonier survey of 3,001 American adults, to see how much of this pattern still holds twenty years later — and at the one tradition, Latter-day Saints, whose teenagers stood out for explaining their beliefs more clearly than most.
This isn't a verdict on anyone's faith. It's a careful look at where a widely shared pattern actually came from. 📖
