Description

Imagine paying a million dollars for a new home and the floors are uneven. This happens a lot, especially in bonus rooms above a garage- because the floor system is actually in the roof trusses. Here we have four trusses that are bolted together, and because each one is slightly different it’s causing unevenness in the floor. To fix it- I start by finding all the nails and circling them. Then I use a punch and a 2-pound sledge to sink them down. Next, I go at it with an electric planer. I start at the high point and lift it up as I move across the floor. Here’s a nail I missed- hitting a nail will with a planer can destroy the blade. Now I know what you’re thinking- doesn’t this weaken the floor? Actually, because I’m mainly planing above a truss and only removing a small amount- it’s not gonna hurt it. Finally, I load 50 grit sandpaper onto my belt sander and use it to blend the two floors together. That great thing about this belt sander is I can get right up against the wall where the planer couldn’t reach. Luckily, this was the only spot in the house that I had to repair; and once the floor was done it was smooth as butter. Now I just need someone to clean up this mess. @hausplans #build #howto #construction #diy #contractor #tools
